The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced the creation of a new award, the Mayor Richard M. Daley Legacy Award for Global Leadership in Creating Sustainable Cities, and said the first recipient of the award will be Daley, the longtime mayor of Chicago.

The award will be presented to Daley at USGBC’s annual Greenbuild conference, scheduled for Nov. 17-19 in Chicago. Daley recently announced that he would not seek re-election after more than 20 years in office.

“USGBC is incredibly honored to be part of Mayor Daley’s legacy as a world leader in demonstrating how a nurturing and sustainable city can be the highest service to a community,” said Roger Platt, USGBC senior vice president of global policy & law.

“This award is in recognition of the mayor’s visionary and planet-changing leadership that has created the amazing legacy of a green city. We are looking forward to bringing our Greenbuild conference back to one of the world’s most sustainable cities.”

The USGBC called Chicago “a leading green-building city in the U.S., as one of the first cities to adopt LEED for public buildings and home to more LEED-certified green buildings than any other.”

The council said Daley has dedicated his time in office to making Chicago “one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the nation. His belief is that Chicago’s future is directly linked with efforts to be a national leader in protecting and enhancing the nation’s natural resources.”
